We are less than one month away from Netflix’s premiere of Season 4 of The Crown. This season will introduce us to the one name synonymous with the title “Princess.” Lady Diana Spencer. Princess Diana brought glamour to the royal family that they had never seen before. Pearls draped down her back. Bodycon. Wearing jewelry as a hair accessory. Sure, Princess Margaret was a goddess but she grew up within the establishment and for the most part… colored within the lines. Diana was bold and constantly told a story with her wardrobe.
That’s why we wanted to talk to haute headpiece connoisseur, Ellie Platt, about how the right headpiece can elevate your style…
Kinsey Schofield: Ellie, you created Crowned By Ellie and your pieces are like elaborate mini costumes. What inspired the business?
Ellie Platt: I started Crowned By Ellie so that everyone and anyone can stand a little taller and bring more confidence to their lives. When you are confident you feel more positive and at ease. I love love love editorial style and try to reflect that in my crowns!
KS: What is the creation process like and how long do they take?
EP: The process can take anywhere from minutes to hours to days! It all depends on whether its custom or part of my collection!
KS: Name your first and last headpiece, go!
EP: I don’t exactly know my first ever piece. As a little girl, I used to help my mom make crowns for her and all her friends during the carnival season. Everyone would have matching headpieces for all the Mardi Gras Luncheons! I feel like I’ve been making them for as long as I can remember! The latest crown I made has been custom halloween piece inspired by my pearl skull look! I’ve gotten to create some incredible variations on this iconic look. Most designs are super secret until my clients gets the chance to strut the look!
KS: Princess Diana seemed very confident when wearing a crown. Do you have to have confidence before you put it on or does the crown sometimes come with a little extra courage?
EP: Confidence surely comes with the crown! The minute a crown touches your head, you can always count on feeling like a queen or king. Crowns are a way to express how strong, beautiful, powerful and special you are.
KS: Is there crown “etiquette?” For instance, don’t wear your crown to Target. Or is it whatever you want it to be?
EP: You never need a special occasion to wear a crown! A headpiece can take a normal boring day and turn it into something glamorous and special. When you go shopping for that perfect outfit, remember to add a unique headpiece because it’s about time we all start dressing like the royalty we are.
KS: What about at a wedding? Is it ok to wear a fab headpiece even though you might take attention away from the bride?
EP: You rarely ever see me without a headpiece, so I’m pro wearing a headpiece at a wedding. I just make them a little low key, not as editorial and more everyday with a splash of bling!
KS: What is your favorite crown that you have designed?
EP: Hmmm, this is a hard one! I love all the tropical headpieces I make. Especially the lemon look for my first year as a captain in the Krewe of Tucks… a local New Orleans Mardi Gras parade! I incorporated a little bit of everything… feathers, glitter, rhinestones, leaves, flowers, and LED Lights!
KS: Can you build custom crowns for customers? If so, what is that process like?
EP: Of course! I can always make a custom crown! I typically ask my client if they are drawn to a certain style, what sorts of designs they love and hate, and if they have something specific that they want to incorporate. Then I dream up and draw out their design, once approved I get right to work!
KS: What is it like to see your creations on other people? Does it make you happy?
EP: It truly makes my heart so happy! There is nothing more I love than seeing someone’s face light up with confidence as they put on their crown!
KS: Are you a fan of the royal family? Do you have any specific memories associated with them?
EP: 150% YES! Princess Diana is everything, but my favorite memory has to be staying up all night/morning with my friends in college to watch the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate! We got dressed up and had a true tea party, hats and all! Fun Fact: I share the same birthday as Prince William – June 21!
