No. They definitely made the guest list… but the real question is… why?
In a recent piece titled Sussex Fatigue – Meghan and Harry are making the British yearn for the Queen Mum for AirMail, Rachel Johnson (Boris Johnson’s sister!) shared a fun piece of gossip circulating around the hoity toity society types.
Johnson writes, “There’s a story doing the rounds that while Carolyn Bartholomew, Diana’s former flatmate, was waiting for the wedding service to start, she turned to the couple alongside her and asked how they knew Harry or Meghan.’We don’t‘, the Clooneys answered brightly.”
The Clooney clan weren’t the only Hollywood elite to storm Windsor. I remember sitting on my futon with a bottle of cheap champaign yelling, “Posh Spice!” (Victoria and David Beckham) – “Oprah!” – “Serena Williams!” – “James.. Corden?” (I could only compare such a bizarre selection of people to the funeral of John McCain. “… is that… Clay Aiken?”)
Rachel insists… some of the more high profile celebrities – “could not possibly be old and dear friends of the bridal couple.”
I don’t know if that’s necessarily true though. In December of 2017, The Sun reported, “Meghan Markle and Victoria Beckham’s ‘secret friendship revealed’ after pair ‘bond over London beauty salon recommendations’.” Which inevitably resulted in, “Victoria Beckham ‘mortified’ and ‘hurt’ after being accused of leaking Meghan Markle stories” headlines.
A source told Closer Magazine, “Vic was mortified when it happened.”
Adding, “When Meghan moved to London, Victoria shared a whole bunch of beauty tips but not long after, some of these emerged in print and Meghan was furious. Inexplicably, she feared Victoria was behind it — I mean, the idea that Victoria Beckham would be personally ringing journalists to give them a scoop is ridiculous — and spoke to Harry about it. Harry is very protective of Meghan, and decided to deal with the matter head-on, by directly contacting his good pal, David. Harry was very polite, but obviously it was a pretty awkward exchange and David was mortified.” (It was later determined that someone at their salon spilled the beans.)
Since beginning their Zoom conference marathons from California, Meghan has been seen wearing Victoria Beckham’s luxury clothing line.
In regards to Oprah, Oprah had ties to Princess Diana… even Fergie. Paul Burrell discusses a visit with Oprah Winfrey and the Princess in his book, A Royal Duty. Perhaps the initial relationship was directly related to Princess Diana but in April of 2019 it was revealed that Prince Harry and Oprah were developing a project on mental health for Apple+. Now we know that the Sussexes are neighbors to Oprah in Montecito.
Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian? It is well documented that Meghan and Serena have been friends since a celebrity volleyball event in 2014.
According to the book Finding Freedom, James Corden’s WIFE is actually friends with Meghan Markle. The book even reveals that during Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s private wedding reception, Corden arrived dressed as Henry VIII.
Of the 600 guests invited, The Daily Mail reports that The Clooneys had preferred seating, “In a sign of their apparent closeness to the couple, the Clooneys were given a ‘prime pew’ next to Lady Carolyn Warren, who is married to John Warren, the Queen’s bloodstock adviser, and opposite Princess Margaret’s son Viscount Linley.”
So why would George tell Carolyn, Harry’s godmother, that they didn’t know the couple? Perhaps he didn’t know who Carolyn was and didn’t want to say anything that might… I don’t know… end up splashed across the tabloids like THIS story has?
And don’t forget that when Princess Diana died… it was Clooney that held a press conference denouncing the aggressive nature of the paparazzi.
What we know for a fact is that the Clooneys have developed a close relationship with the Sussex family. George and Amal hosted Prince Harry and Meghan at their Oxfordshire home at least twice. Plus, we know that Amal flew Meghan home after her (infamous) baby shower.
So thanks for the goss, Rach. But we think Clooney’s intention behind the answer was likely privacy.
