Meghan Markle is suing the Mail on Sunday after they published pieces of a private letter she sent to her father, Thomas Markle. Meghan is specifically suing over the misuse of private information, copyright infringement, and breach of the Data Protection Act. The Mail on Sunday has argued that Meghan knew her letter would be leaked to media because of her “elaborate handwriting.” (Meghan is a known calligraphy savant.)
Back in May, The High Court decided to toss claims that the Mail acted dishonestly by removing portions of the letter and claims that the newspaper “stirred up” issues between Meghan and her family, deeming it irrelevant to the lawsuit.
“Whilst the Judge recognises that there is a claim for breach of privacy and copyright, we are surprised to see that his ruling suggests that dishonest behaviour is not relevant,” Meghan’s spokesperson told media.
“We feel honesty and integrity are at the core of what matters; or as it relates to the Mail on Sunday and Associated Newspapers, their lack thereof.”
In what most would consider a loss in the first round, Meghan has agreed to pay more than $87,000 (US) towards the Mail on Sunday’s legal costs.
However, critics are crying hypocrisy over the lawsuit and argue that Meghan and Prince Harry are rumored to be behind a lot of the hot gossip in Carolyn Durand and Omid Scobie’s Finding Freedom.
Up next, the Duchess of Sussex and her team fight in court to protect the names of five friends that spoke to People Magazine anonymously on her behalf.
