Royal biographer Ingrid Seward told Sky News that Prince Philip is “very disappointed” with Meghan Markle over her inability to put aside her career aspirations to support Prince Harry and the royal family.
“I think he’s very, very disappointed because I think he feels he gave up his naval career in order to stand by the Queen and help the monarchy. And why can’t Meghan just give up her acting career, support her husband and support the monarchy?”
Seward continues, “As he used to say to Diana, this is not a popularity contest, this is all of us working together. He just cannot understand why she couldn’t support Harry and help him rather than wanting to have her voice.”
But to be fair, Markle wanted both. The couple created a plan that allowed them to still have one foot in the royal family while they created financial opportunities for themselves. Was it a realistic plan? Palace insiders say no, but more importantly, Harry and Meghan jumped the gun on announcing their departure which left the royal family less than interested in negotiations.
The Duke of Edinburgh famously sacrificed his naval career once his wife became Queen. Although, if you’re a fan of The Crown, you know this sometimes left him restless. Causing trouble with HRH. Whether it was maturity or council, Prince Philip eventually became one of the crown’s most passionate defenders. You saw this throughout his relationships with both Princess Diana and Fergie.
Seward now suggests that the Duke is “irritated” that Meghan has aggressively carved out a path of her/their own… leaving the royal family feeling abandoned by the Queen’s favorite grandchild.
“He simply doesn’t want to get involved anymore,” Seward told Sky News. She explained that when the Queen called Prince Charles and Prince William to the Sandringham Estate for Megxit negotiations, Prince Philip checked out.
“Of course, it irritates him hugely. And when they had the Sandringham Summit, Prince Philip was seen leaving the house very swiftly before they all arrived.”
Despite these reports, some sources are claiming that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are eager to return to the UK to see Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. At 99, he is plagued by reports of ill health. COVID has made travel more difficult but royal watchers expect to see the Sussex family on UK soil soon.
